Segment 1 of the Waitukubuli National Trail is 6.6 km south of the volcanic areas of the island of Dominica and can be completed in four (4) hours. It is now a very difficult hike which begins at Scotts Head Village and ends at the Soufriere Estate.
This segment begins at Soufriere Estate and ends at Bellevue Chopin, an experience as you take a real glimpse of Dominica’s thick rain forest which gives the opportunity for sighting of local flora and fauna and cultural heritage.
The area known for exotic flora and fauna and wellness appeal such as sulphur springs and hot spas is placed on Segment 3 of the Waitukubuli National Trail. On this trail, one can get a glimpse of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a renowned World Heritage Site and a loop to the Boiling Lake can also be seen.
Exploring Segment 4 of the trail offers views of five (5) mountains and showcases primary and secondary forest, natural hot spas/therapy at Wotten Waven. This section of the trail is also located in the heart of Morne Trois Pitons National Park World Heritage Site and is approximately 13.3 km long and can be completed within six (6) hours and culminates at the Waitukubuli National Trail Research and Interpretation Facility located at Pont Casse.
Moving along the Old Carib Trace (Kalinago Stone Pathway) one can visit the Emerald Pool while passing through a tiny community called Fond Melle and leads you to the eastern community of Castle Bruce where sounds of the Atlantic Ocean’s waves crashes on the shoreline.
From Richmond in the village of Castle Bruce, the trail takes you through the Kalinago Territory, home to Dominica’s Indigenous people commonly known as the Carib Territory. This segment showcases culture and lifestyles of the Kalinago people. Segment 6 is said to be a moderate/difficult hike to some extent.
This trail emphasizes that Dominica is clean, green and ideal for relaxation and tranquillity. From the Hatten Garden Estate to the farm land at First Camp in the heights of Marigot, showcases agricultural cultivation, primary forest stands, rivers and exotic coastal vistas.
This long challenging trail which goes from east to west within nine (9) hours of hiking, gives one the opportunity to pass through the Northern Forest Reserve, across rivers and over the Mosquito Mountain before descending into Carholm Estate.
It continues along a banana farm access road before disappearing into jungles of the Northern Forest Reserve for a roller coaster adventure that ends in the highlands of Colihaut Village. It also comprises of mix farmlands, prime forest and spectacular natural features.
Segment 10 of the Waitukubuli National Trail is the most westerly segment and traverses old and abandoned farms and estate roads. The area is heavily forested and sections of the Northern Forest Reserve provide excellent opportunities for sighting the Jaco and Sisserou Parrots as well as other fauna in their natural and un-disturbed habitats.
It offers the opportunity for bird watching such as parrots and other fauna in their natural and un-disturbed habitats. It also showcases a mix of wild rivers, prime forest, farmlands, history and heritage as well as city and rural life.
Walking this trail, one can find a perfect means to exploring and discovering the deep rural areas of northern Dominica. It traverses an area which is considered deeply rural Dominica and opens non-traditional tourism communities.
During a hike on Segment 13 one can take a view of the French Islands of Marie Galante, The Saints and Guadeloupe. The Tafia Falls is also located on the Segment. Segment 13 has its own rich biodiversity with singing birds, jumping frogs, colourful and radiant bloom of flowers, crawling insects and towering trees.
It begins at Capuchin and takes one along the small coastal villages of Toucarie, Cottage, Clifton, and Tane Tane and then culminates one’s adventurous journey of the Waitukubuli National Trail at the Cabrits National Park (commonly known as Fort Shirley). Segment 14 boasts natural attractions such as the Bell Hall Beach and the Toucarie Beach Front.
