Code of Conduct

Protecting Our Natural Heritage

Please follow these principles to ensure the preservation of our natural and cultural treasures for future generations.

1

Plan and Prepare

  • Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you are visiting.
  • Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies.
  • Schedule your trip to avoid times of high use.
  • Visit in small groups when possible. Consider splitting larger groups when possible.
  • Use a map, compass, or GPS.
2

Travel on Designated Trails

  • Hike on maintained trails with durable surfaces.
  • Walk in single file in the middle of the trail even when wet or muddy.
3

Dispose of Wastes Properly

  • Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter.
  • Dispose of trash and litter, in designated litter bins.
  • Utilize toilet facilities at trailheads and visitor centers whenever possible.
  • Do not camp within the National Parks and ecotourism sites unless permitted.
  • Do not pollute streams and lakes.
4

Leave What You Find

  • Preserve the past: examine, photograph, but do not touch cultural or historic structures or artifacts.
  • Leave any plant, flower, leaf, seed, fruit, rock or other object, creature, or artefact as you find them.
  • Avoid introducing or transporting non-native plant or animal species.
5

Respect Wildlife

  • Observe wildlife from a distance.
  • Do not follow or approach wildlife.
  • Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators.
  • Dogs brought into the park or ecotourist site must be kept on a lead or leash.
  • Avoid wildlife during sensitive times: mating, nesting, and raising young.
6

Be Considerate of Other Visitors

  • Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.
  • Be courteous, yield to other visitors on the trail.
  • Do not abuse, insult, threaten assault authorized persons or other visitors.
  • Avoid loud voices or noises.

Thank You for Your Commitment

Thank you for doing your part to protect the natural and cultural heritage.
